The Supreme Court has said it is ‘deeply disturbed’ by the video of two women in Manipur being paraded naked. Terming it ‘simply unacceptable’, a bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud directed the Centre and the state government to take immediate steps and apprise the apex court on what action has been taken.

CJI says it’s simply unacceptable. Using women as an instrument in an area of communal strife. It’s the grossest of constitutional abuse. He further says we are deeply disturbed by the videos which have emerged. If the government does not act we will.

Supreme Court says it’s time government really steps in and takes action. It’s simply unacceptable in constitutional democracy. It’s deeply disturbing.

“We will give a little time to the government to act otherwise we will take action if nothing is happening on the ground,” the bench, also comprising Justices P S Narasimha and Manoj Misra, said.

Tension mounted in the hills of Manipur after a May 4 video surfaced on Wednesday showing two women from one of the warring communities being paraded naked by a few men from the other side.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday spoke to Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, a day after a video of two women being paraded naked in Manipur surfaced, sources said.

The home minister is believed to have directed the chief minister to take strict action against those involved in the incident which took place on May 4.

Shah has asked Singh to take possible steps to nab all those involved in the incident and take appropriate actions as per law, sources said.

We saw the video and I felt so bad, it’s a crime against humanity. I immediately ordered the police to arrest the culprits and the state govt will try to ensure capital punishment for the accused, Manipur CM N Biren Singh was quoted as saying
