Jahangirpuri Riots : Supreme Court Steps In Halts Demolition Drive, Orders Status Quo; Schedules Hearing On April 21

The Supreme Court has halted the demolition drive conducted by North Delhi Municipal Corporation in Jahangirpuri, and has ordered “status quo”.

Reacting to the SC ruling, Raja Iqbal Singh the Mayor of North Delhi Municipal Corporation Told ANI, We will follow the SC order and take action accordingly.

The Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled North Delhi Municipal Corporation had scheduled an “encroachment removal action programme”, wherein illegal construction in the Jahangirpuri area was to be removed today and tomorrow.

Earlier, Bulldozers arrived at the Jahangirpuri area of Delhi which witnessed violence on April 16 during a religious procession An anti-encroachment drive will take place in the area.

Raja Iqbal Singh, Mayor, North Delhi Municipal Corporation said, “The anti-encroachment drive will take place across Delhi. Earlier also we had requested security for the drive but due to some reasons the action was not taken.”

Special Commissioner of Police, Law and Order, Delhi Police said that the police will provide security to the civic agency (NDMC) for the anti-encroachment drive. “Adequate force is available. Focus is on law & order situation,” he said.
