Jahangirpuri Hanuman Jayanti Violence : 14 People Arrested ; Stringent Action Against Rioters Says Special CP

Fourteen people have been arrested in connection with the violence during a Hanuman Jayanti procession in northwest Delhi’s Jahangirpuri, police said.

They said there was stone-pelting and some vehicles were also torched during the clashes between two communities Saturday evening.

People are requested to inform police if suspicious activities take place in their area or any group indulge in argument. We’ve arrested 14 people, 7 cases were filed & weapons were recovered, Dependra Pathak, Special CP, Law & Order, Delhi Police on Jahangirpuri violence told ANI

A senior official said a police sub-inspector received a bullet injury during the violence.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest) Usha Rangnani said an first information report (FIR) was registered on Saturday under Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 120 B (criminal conspiracy), 147 (rioting) and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Arms Act.

“Nine people have been arrested so far in connection with the FIR,” she said. Later, she said five more arrests were made.

She also said nine people in total including eight police personnel and one civilian were injured during the clashes and are being treated at the Babu Jagjeevan Ram Memorial Hospital.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in his first reaction to the violence was quoted by ANI  as saying  : “I appeal to everyone to maintain peace as the country cannot progress without it. The central government has the responsibility to maintain peace in the national capital and I appeal to people to maintain peace”.
