Plunging Into Crisis :Thousands Of Angry Protestors Storm Official Residence, Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa Flees ; Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe Calls Emergency Meeting

Sri Lanka plunged into more chaos and uncertainty as thousands of protesters in Colombo broke through police barricades and stormed President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s official residence in the central Colombo’s high-security Fort area after breaking the barricades, demanding he resign and accept responsibility for the island’s gravest economic crisis that has caused thousands of Sri Lankans to live on one meal a day.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa who was facing calls for resignation since March was using the President’s House as his residence and office since protesters came to occupy the entrance to his office early April.

Sri Lankan news agencies reported that Gotabaya was taken to a different location before the protesters stormed his residence. Protesters took out a mega rally in Colombo on Saturday after a curfew on protests were lifted demanding president Rajapaksa step down from his role.

Meanwhile , According to report by ANI, Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has summoned an emergency Party Leaders meeting to discuss the situation and come to a swift resolution. He is also requesting the Speaker to summon Parliament.

“I am a part of the protest and stand with people’s demand… this protest has been going on for over three months,” said Sri Lankan former cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya to ANI on the recent protest in Colombo.
