More than a decade after the bestselling SupermarketWala, retail veteran Damodar Mall and Harsh Mall explore why kiranas, supermarkets, e-commerce, quick commerce and AI are converging to reshape the way India shops
How does the neighbourhood kirana continue to thrive despite the rise of quick commerce?
What can JioMart, DMart Ready, Meesho and Amazon reveal about the Indian consumer?
Digital SupermarketWala is a timely exploration of the cultural habits and consumer behaviours shaping the next chapter of Indian retail.
Rather than framing traditional retail and digital commerce as opposing forces, the book looks at how consumers move fluidly between them. A shopper might rely on the neighbourhood store for familiarity and trust, visit a supermarket for discovery, use an e-commerce platform for choice, turn to quick commerce for urgency and increasingly use AI to simplify the entire process. The Indian shopper has always been omnichannel.
The book revisits memorable ideas from SupermarketWala, including the Shopkeeper-in-Law and the Elbow Push Factor, while introducing a new vocabulary for the digital age: Algo Uncle, the digital successor to the trusted intermediary who helps consumers navigate overwhelming choice; the Devil Doorbell, which examines how the final few feet of delivery can disrupt even sophisticated fulfilment systems; and DIFM or “do it for me” commerce, which explores why convenience and delegation may become even more powerful as AI and agentic commerce develop.
Through stories and case studies involving JioMart, Big Bazaar Direct, DMart Ready, Amazon, Meesho, Walmart and emerging AI tools, Digital SupermarketWala asks what truly drives buying decisions in one of the world’s most complex and dynamic consumer markets. The authors explore the enduring importance of trust, value, convenience, privacy, language, family and cultural context.
About The Authors

Damodar Mall, a lifelong retailer, started as an FMCG marketer at Unilever. He set up his first store under the Apna Bazaar co-operative’s brand in Mumbai. That start-up was the genesis of DMart. Damodar is part of the leadership at India’s largest retailer, Reliance Retail, and helped shape Smart Bazaar, JioMart and FreshPik from scratch. Known for his insights about consumer and market behaviour in India, Damodar is generous about sharing his knowledge. SupermarketWala was his first book about the Indian shopper. Be a SupermarketWala, his second book, guides small retailers to set up supermarkets. The book has been translated into four languages.
When he is not shaping omnichannel retail ideas, Damodar helps young brands and entrepreneurs succeed. He likes to play music on his keyboard, a passion he picked up from his sons Harsh and Yash. Damodar lives in Mumbai with his IIM batchmate and wife Sangeeta, a novelist and podcaster.
Harsh Mall is a marketing and customer insights leader who has spent over a decade helping brands, retailers and government agencies evolve to keep pace with consumer behaviour and technology. He went through The Doon School and Syracuse University, took an MBA from NYU Stern and cut his teeth on market research at Ipsos, New York. Today he is in the ‘running the shop’ business at Walmart Canada, where his work and passion overlap with his father’s, only separated by a generation and a few continents. Digital SupermarketWala is his first book and the natural product of that generational and geographic overlap.
Harsh is a trained musician and former co-host of the Subdrift NYC open mic. He enjoys travelling and the outdoors, a joy he shares with his wife, Sakshi, a tech and business consultant. They live in Toronto, Canada, with their daughter, Jiya.
The official release for the book is in October 2026
