All eyes will be fixed to the Bhabanipur constituency on October 3 when result to the By-poll will be announced. The result is expected to further escalate the war of words between the BJP and the TMC. Both parties have been at loggerheads on host of issues.
Trinamool Congress supremo and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is contesting from the seat to retain her CM post. The need for Mamata to contest was necessitated following her loss to BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari during the assembly polls earlier this year from the Nandigram.
As per the rules of the Constitution of India, she has to become a member of the state assembly within six months of her assuming office as Chief Minister.
The Bhabanipur constituency, which was formed in 2011 after delimitation, has been a stronghold of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) since its inception. Mamata Banerjee’s Kalighat residence falls under this constituency.

The election on September 30 saw a modest turnout of 53.32 per cent. Two other Assembly seats in the state, which went to polls on the same day, however, reported a higher turnout.
Samserganj recorded 78.60 per cent voter turnout, while Jangipur 76.12 per cent till 5 pm, as per Election Commission data.
