Ahead of the polls BJP is facing severe dissent in Uttar Pradesh. The Yogi Adityanath government is battling hard to control the damage . Now it is learnt that Mukesh Verma, BJP MLA from Shikohabad (Firozabad), Uttar Pradesh, has resigned from the primary membership of the party.

“Swami Prasad Maurya is our leader. We will support whatever decision he takes. Many other leaders will join us in the coming days,” he says.

In a massive hit to the BJP, a total of 6 leaders including two top ministers and four MLAs have quit the party to join the opposition Samajwadi Party in the state ahead of the 2022 state assembly elections.

Swami Prasad Maurya quit the party and joined the Samajwadi Party in presence of party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday.

In his resignation letter addressed to CM Adityanath, which he later posted on social media, Maurya said he “worked with dedication despite following a divergent ideology” but was resigning “because of the grave oppression of Dalits, OBCs, farmers, unemployed and small businessmen”.

Apart from Maurya, MLA Brijesh Kumar Prajapati from Tindwari assembly seat in Banda, Bhagwati Sagar MLA from Bilahur, Vinay Shakya Bidhuna MLA, Roshan Lal Verma MLA from Tilhar Sahahjanpur state cabinet minister Dara Singh Chauhan have quit the party.

The polls in Uttar Pradesh will be held in seven phases — on February 10, 14, 20, 23, 27, March 3 and 7. The results will be declared on March 10.
