The 23 -year- old boxer from Assam’s Golaghat, Lovlina Borgohain has scripted history. Becoming first sportsperson from the state to bag a Olympic medal – Bronze on her debut in the mega sporting extravaganza.
In the much awaited semis clash she lost to Busenaz Surmeneli of Turkey by unanimous decision in the women’s welterweight (69 kg) semifinal at Tokyo 2020.
Earlier, She assured India’s first boxing medal at the ongoing Olympic Games when she upstaged former world champion, Nien-Chin Chen of Taiwan, to enter the semis.
Lovlina’s show made up for the boxing disappointment after Mary Kom crashed out. Mary Kom had won a bronze medal in the 2012 Olympics in London. Before Vijender Singh won Bronze in 2008 Games In Beijing .
With Lovlina bagging Bronze, India’s medal tally at Tokyo now stands as of now at 3 . Mirabai Chanu weightlifting 49 Kg ( Silver), P V Sindhu ( Badminton) Bronze were the previous medal winners.
