In the face- off between the the two five- time winners Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings , it was the men in yellow who won the Tata IPL 2024 encounter at Wankhede by 20 runs.
In the much awaited clash, Mumbai Indians Skipper Hardik Pandya won the toss and opted to field first . MI were happy with the start as CSK lost opener Ajinkya Rahane early for ( 5). Fellow opener Rachin Ravindra did not last long he was out for 21 ( 16 balls, 2 fours, 1 six). CSK Skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad gave the innings the momentum with a superb innings . Dropped on 39 by Rohit Sharma, Ruturaj Gaikwad smashed a attacking 69 ( 40 balls , 5 fours, five sixes). He got splendid support from left- hander Shivam Dube. Dube was devastating as he displayed his range of power shots all- round the wicket. Dube remained unbeaten with 66 ( 38 balls , 10 fours, 2 sixes). Kiwi Daryl Mitchell fell for 17.
Walking in to bat in the last over with a thunderous applause from the crowd legendary Mahendra Singh Dhoni did not disappoint fans as he smashed hat- trick of sixes off Hardik Pandya in a brilliant cameo 20 ( 4 balls ,3 sixes). MSD blitz helped CSK reach 206/ 4 in their 20 overs.

MI bowling figures : Mohammad Nabi 0/ 19 ( 3 overs), Gerald Coetzee 1/ 35 ( 4 overs), Jasprit Bumrah 0/ 27 ( 4overs) was once again brilliant. Akash Madhwal 0/ 37 ( 3 overs), Shreyas Gopal1/ 9 ( 1 over), Hardik Pandya 2/ 43 ( 3 overs), Romario Shepherd 0/ 33 ( 2 overs)
In reply MI were off to a flier with openers Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan blazing away . The duo put on 70-1, 7.1 overs. The chase of 2027 was well and truly on.
Ishan Kishan fell for 23 ( 15 balls , 3 fours, 1 six) . Suryakumar Yadav did not disturb the scorers out to brilliant catch by Mustafizur Rahman off Matheesha Pathirana. Matheesha Pathirana had bagged Ishan earlier . Tilak Varma fell after some fine shots for 31 . Varma was Matheesha Pathirana’s third victim.
MI skipper Hardik Pandy struggled and was out for 2 to Tushar Deshpande. Tim David hit to huge sixes off Mustafizur Rahman before holing out to him for 13 caught By Rachin Ravindra .
However for MI unfazed by wickets falling around him , Rohit Sharma was in sublime form . The India skipper was a delight to watch for his unbeaten 106 ( 64 balls , 11 fours, 5 sixes) . Tragic that his fine knock went in vain as Mumbai could manage 186/ 6 in their 20 overs.
The cameo by MSD 4 balls three sixes 20 ( 4 balls ) was the difference at the end
For CSK Bowling figures were : Matheesha Pathirana was outstanding 4/ 28 ( 4 overs), Tushar Deshpande 1/ 29 ( 4 overs), Mustafizur Rahman 1/ 55 ( 4 overs) was expensive. Shardul Thakur 0/ 35 ( 4 overs), Ravindra Jadeja 0/ 37 ( 4 overs)
