SOCIALISM ON THE HORIZON – AKHILESH YADAV AND THE LEGACY OF SAMAJWAD By MADAN YADAV

Ahead of the 2027 UP Elections, Socialism on the Horizon Decodes Akhilesh Yadav, the PDA Strategy and the Reinvention of Samajwad. What Comes After 2024? Socialism on the Horizon Examines Akhilesh Yadav and the New Politics of Uttar Pradesh

Two years after Uttar Pradesh delivered one of the biggest political surprises of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections—and with the state now moving towards the consequential 2027 Assembly polls—Penguin Random House India announces the publication of Socialism on the Horizon: Akhilesh Yadav and the Legacy of Samajwad by Dr Madan Yadav, a wide-ranging study of Akhilesh Yadav’s political evolution and the changing grammar of socialist politics in India. At its centre is a question with immediate national relevance: how did a political tradition rooted in twentieth-century Lohiaite socialism reinvent itself for an electorate increasingly preoccupied with jobs, representation, technology, constitutional rights and economic opportunity? Yadav examines the Samajwadi Party’s remarkable 2024 performance—when it won thirty-seven Lok Sabha seats and emerged as the third-largest party in Parliament—through Akhilesh Yadav’s PDA strategy and what the book describes as “Samajwad 2.0”: an attempt to combine the politics of social justice with digital inclusion, infrastructure, youth aspirations and modern governance. The book argues that this represents a shift from conventional identity politics towards a broader rights- and development-based formulation of socialism.

But Socialism on the Horizon is also a story about inheritance, dignity and generational change. It travels backwards from Akhilesh Yadav to the socialist tradition that preceded him—from Ram Manohar Lohia to Mulayam Singh Yadav—and asks what survives when political ideas pass from one generation to another. At the heart of this history is Mulayam Singh’s extraordinary journey from a farming family in Saifai, and from the worlds of teaching and traditional wrestling, to becoming one of the defining political figures of the Hindi heartland. The book follows the lives of people for whom debates over caste, representation, education, employment and political power were never merely theoretical. It also confronts difficult and controversial episodes in that history, including the political rehabilitation of Phoolan Devi, and examines Akhilesh’s attempt to translate an inherited socialist vocabulary into the concerns of a younger generation. For Dr Yadav, the project carries a deeply personal intellectual urgency: the questionnaire describes the death of Mulayam Singh Yadav as a catalyst for documenting what the author sees as the unfinished project of egalitarian democracy, while also identifying the reported ritual purification of the former chief minister’s official residence after Akhilesh Yadav left office as an episode that sharpened his interest in caste, dignity and institutional power.

Written by Dr Madan Yadav, Socialism on the Horizon is conceived not as a conventional political biography but as a work of political and sociological analysis. Yadav brings together the ideas of Ram Manohar Lohia, B.R. Ambedkar, Mahatma Gandhi, Antonio Gramsci and John Rawls to examine questions of representation, distributive justice, democratic opposition and subaltern political power. Moving between Uttar Pradesh and the wider Global South, the book situates Akhilesh Yadav’s leadership within larger debates around democratic resilience, youth politics, inequality and centralized power. Dr Yadav has written research papers and contributed chapters to edited volumes and is also the author of The Heartland: Great Game Returns. His latest work seeks to provide something relatively unusual in contemporary writing on Indian politics: not merely an account of a political party or leader, but an attempt to understand how an old ideology changes when confronted by a new electorate.
