Shashi Tharoor hits back at Arnab Goswami, files Rs 2 cr defamation case

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor and Thiruvananthapuram MP has filed a civil defamation case in the Delhi high court against Republic TV and and its Editor in chief  Arnab Goswami. The former MOS External Affairs and HRD had earlier slammed the Republic TV’s expose on late wife Sunanda Pushkar as outright lies.

“Pleased to confirm this story. We filed (the defamation case) today. Had enough of his campaign of calumny,” Tharoor tweeted.

Goswami’s Republic TV had recently aired what it called an exposé with regard to the death of the Congress leader’s wife Sunanda Pushkar.

It played tapes of a conversation between a reporter and Tharoor’s assistant Narayan on the night of Pushkar’s death.

Pushkar was found dead in a five-star hotel in south Delhi on the night of January 17, 2014.

The suave and articulate Thiruvananthapuram MP has said he had nothing to hide and had been fully cooperative with the police. He had rubbished the Republic TV report, saying the news channel was indulging in a publicity stunt to get attention.

In the lawsuit, Tharoor was entitled to Rs 2 crore damage and compensation “for having suffered humiliation and having suffered severe loss of reputation in the eyes of the public and he has baselessly been declared by the defendants as the alleged murderer of his late wife”.
