Prime Minister Narendra Modi  finally interacted with a section of the people belonging to the two warring communities, Kuki and Meitei, who were displaced due to the ethnic violence in Manipur, officials said.

According to various media reports , Modi listened to the concerns of the families of internally displaced persons (IDPs) at the historic Kangla Fort complex in Imphal and Peace Ground in Churachandpur, and assured them of the Centre’s commitment to restore peace and normalcy in the state, they said.

More than 60,000 people, nearly 40,000 from the Kuki Zo community and around 20,000 Meiteis, have been displaced due to the ethnic violence.

While many of the displaced people have moved outside the state, the majority of them have been living in relief camps in poor living conditions with no privacy and no sources of income.

Further, Prime Minister Narendra Modi  unveiled projects worth Rs 8,500 crore in Manipur during his first visit to the state after ethnic violence broke out nearly two-and-a-half years ago.

From the Kuki stronghold of Churachandpur, Modi laid the foundation stones for projects worth over Rs 7,300 crore.

Among them were the Manipur urban roads, drainage and asset management improvement initiative worth Rs 3,647 crore, and the Manipur Infotech Development (MIND) project worth Rs 550 crore.

“Manipur is a land of hope and promise. Unfortunately, violence had gripped this magnificent area. A little while ago, I met the affected people who are living in camps. After speaking with them, I can say that a new dawn of hope and confidence is awaiting Manipur,” . Modi said in Churachandpur. He said the Union government would continue to cooperate with the State government to help resettle displaced people in appropriate locations as soon as possible, and to establish peace.
