In a match where Mumbai Indians were seen as favourites to win against the bottom placed Kings XI Punjab, there was twist. Kings Xi Punjab showed grit and determination to pull off a upset as they beat the Mumbai Indians in the second super over to clinch a thrilling win.
After Rohit Sharma had won the toss and elected to bat first, the Mumbai Indians were in trouble early with Rohit falling for ( 9) , Suryakumar Yadav ( 0) Ishan Kishan ( 7 ) fell cheaply and the scoreboard was 38/ 3. Fortunately for Mumbai Indians, Quinton de Kock was in superb touch as he has been right through this tournament. De Kock scored a fine 53 off 43 balls. Krunal Pandya chipped in with a fine 34. Brother Hardik did not last long out for 8. But it was the blitz towards the end by a partnership unbeaten one of 57 off mere 21 balls by Kieron Pollard 34 off 12 balls ( 1 four and four sixes ) and Nathan Coulter Nile 24 off 12 balls with four fours saw the Mumbai Indians reach 176/ 6 in their twenty overs.

Chris Gayle scored ( 24) Nicholas Pooran promised much but fell for ( 24 ) . Glenn Maxwell was out to horrendous shot for ( 0). As wickets fell around him K L Rahul was brilliant and once again came up with a captain’s knock of 77 off 51 balls before he was bowled b ya gem of a delivery by Jasprit Bumrah. A sizzling yorker. Deepak Hooda 23 and Chris Jordan 16 tried hard but not go over the line as the team finished with 176 / 6 in their twenty overs. Meaning the match to be decided by super over.
KXIP scored five runs off the Super Over, bowled by Jasprit Bumrah. However, Mohammed Shami too bowled brilliantly as he managed to restrict Mumbai Indians to five runs as well.
During the second Super Over, Mumbai Indians batted first and scored 11 runs. From KXIP, Chris Gayle and Mayank Agarwal came out to bat and easily took the side over the line on the fourth delivery. And the relief on K L Rahul’s face and sheer delight in Kings XI Punjab’s co-owner Preity Zinta was visible in the stands .
