LONG INDIA – THE WORLD’S GREATEST INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITY By HARSH MADHUSUDAN

The rupee has weakened sharply, Indian equities have disappointed after years of exuberance, foreign investors have pulled money from the market, and artificial intelligence has raised new questions about the future of India’s services economy. The easy optimism around the “India growth story” has suddenly become much harder to sustain. Yet India continues to grow faster than most major economies.

In Long India: The World’s Greatest Investment Opportunity, investor and economic thinker Harsh Madhusudan argues that this contradiction is exactly what we should be paying attention to: are we mistaking a difficult few years in the markets for something fundamentally wrong with India’s long-term economic story? His bold case is that India could become a developed nation and potentially the world’s largest economy by the middle of this century—and that today’s pessimism may be obscuring one of the biggest investment opportunities of our time.

At the heart of the book is a much simpler, more human story. India did not suddenly acquire 1.4 billion people; what has changed is how connected those 1.4 billion people are becoming. A small shopkeeper can receive money instantly through UPI; a young entrepreneur in a smaller city can sell across the country; GST has made it easier for businesses to cross state borders; new highways and freight corridors are bringing markets closer; and millions of ordinary Indians who once saved largely through gold, property or deposits are now investing every month through mutual funds and equities. Madhusudan argues that India’s enormous population, once difficult to connect and serve, is beginning to function as a single economic marketplace. Scale, he argues, may be India’s most underestimated advantage.

But Long India goes considerably further than the familiar story of a young population and rising consumption. Madhusudan makes three provocative predictions: India will grow faster than most forecasts expect; that growth will translate into shareholder wealth more effectively than China’s extraordinary economic rise did; and the rupee, rather than weakening indefinitely, is deeply undervalued and could eventually appreciate. The book takes the difficult questions seriously too—where will the jobs come from, can India create a skilled workforce at this scale, will AI threaten its white-collar economy, can manufacturing become globally competitive, and can infrastructure and institutions keep pace? This is what makes Long India particularly timely: it makes its strongest case for India precisely when confidence in that story is being tested. As Madhusudan writes, “The structural story has never been stronger while the cyclical stress has rarely been worse.”

Harsh Madhusudan is an investor, economist and writer who has spent nearly two decades studying India’s economy, markets and long-term development. His work brings together economics, financial markets, history, technology, geopolitics and public policy, and he is the co-author of A New Idea of India: The Civilizational Republic. In Long India, he turns that research towards one of the biggest economic questions of our time: what happens when the world’s largest young population begins to operate as an increasingly connected, productive and investable economy? At a moment when investors, businesses and policymakers are once again debating whether the India story has been oversold, Long India offers a provocative case for why they may instead be underestimating what comes next.
