Bhaktas & Kshetras : JOURNEYS OF LOVE AND DEVOTION By VINAY L VARANASI

Can devotion include anger? Can love for God look like an argument? What does it mean when a devotee scolds Rama, throws an object at Venkateshwara, or quarrels with Narasimha in the middle of a forest? At a time when younger Indians are rediscovering spirituality and seeking meaning in ancient traditions, Bhaktas & Kshetras: Journeys of Love and Devotion offers a strikingly fresh perspective on bhakti. Drawing from scriptures, songs, folklore and oral traditions, the book uncovers extraordinary stories of devotees whose relationships with the divine were anything but distant or formal. Through eight sacred kshetras—spiritually charged landscapes that have shaped generations of seekers—the book reveals a richer understanding of devotion, one that embraces longing, friendship, frustration and unconditional love. Born from a series of talks delivered during the pandemic, Bhaktas & Kshetras invites readers to look beyond ritual and architecture to discover the invisible spiritual energies that continue to animate India’s sacred geography.

The book began with a childhood moment of bewilderment. Raised on idealized images of bhakti, the author was shocked to encounter a classical composition in which a devotee openly berated Lord Rama, asking him, “Whose father’s wealth are you enjoying so shamelessly?” Far from blasphemy, such encounters became the starting point for a lifelong exploration into the many emotional shades of devotion. Over the years, stories gathered from priests, grandparents, flower sellers and custodians of oral memory revealed that the most remarkable bhaktas did not merely worship God—they forged deeply personal relationships with the divine, relationships that transformed not only themselves but also the sacred spaces they inhabited. Their love, discipline and yearning imbued these kshetras with a spiritual charge that continues to draw pilgrims centuries later.
