#Caste Census : The Union Government has also announced a similar initiative. So why is it being labelled a conspiracy when we do it? – Siddaramaiah, Karnataka Chief Minister

The Karnataka government headed by Chief Minister  Siddaramaiah has  approved the conduct of a statewide Social and Educational Survey or caste census of all citizens between September 22 and October 7 2025.

According to media reports, In its order, the government said, “In view of the details stated in the proposal, approval is accorded to the Karnataka State Backward Classes Commission to undertake a survey on the social and educational status of all citizens of the State from September 22, 2025 to October 7, 2025.”

Further, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah clarified that the upcoming Socio-Economical and Educational Survey (caste census) is not limited to collecting information on castes alone but also aims to assess the social, economic, and educational status of the population.

The CM said that about 1.75 lakh teachers have been appointed as enumerators for the survey, who will collect detailed data from people, including their social, economic, and educational status. “The Union Government has also announced a similar initiative. So why is it being labelled a conspiracy when we do it? This exercise has been entrusted to a statutory body. The government only provides the guidelines,” Siddaramaiah said when asked about the motive behind the caste census.

The order notes that the Chairman of the Karnataka State Backward Classes Commission had earlier written to the government stating the intention to carry out the survey during the above period.
