The Supreme Court has constituted an independent special investigation team to conduct probe into allegations of use of animal fat in making Tirupati laddus.
The special investigation team (SIT) will comprise two officials each from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Andhra Pradesh Police besides a senior Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) official.
Observing that it will not allow the court to be used as a ‘political battleground’, a bench of Justices B R Gavai and K V Viswanathan passed the order on a batch of pleas, including those seeking a court-monitored probe into the matter.
“We don’t want this to turn into a political drama,” the bench observed.
Yogesh Porwar, a devotee quoted by ANI said , “The Laddu issue should have been investigated independently first, the conclusion should have been announced because the devotees are in a state of confusion ever since. It is a matter of faith which should not be shaken… Till the time there is no conclusion, the issue must not be used for political gains and create panic among people.”
On Supreme Court’s order to set up an independent SIT to investigate the issue of adulteration of Tirupati laddu, BJP MP Dr CM Ramesh quoted by ANI said , “The Supreme Court has directed to form a five-member committee. This is a good step. Whatever happened in the past will come to light.”
