Pan India NRC U-Turn : Home Ministry Clarifies No Move By Centre At National Level

Amidst massive protests all over the country the Centre has, till now, not taken any decision to “prepare” a National Register of Indian Citizens at the national level, Lok Sabha was informed .

In a written reply, Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said, “Till now, the government has not taken any decision to prepare National Register of Indian Citizens at the national level.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier clarified that there was no cabinet meet or any meeting regarding PAN India NRC.

Modi’s remarks put Union Home Minister Amit Shah in a spot as he stated in parliament that government intends to have a PAN India NRC soon.

On December 9,2019, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said in the Lok Sabha: “We are very clear that NRC will happen in this country.”  Shah also said in the House, “Magar maan ke chaliye ki NRC aane wala hai” (but accept that there will be an NRC).

But Modi’s remark of no discussion of PAN India NRC at a rally in Delhi made Shah do a dramatic U- turn two days later.

“There is no need to debate this (pan-India NRC) as there is no discussion on it right now, PM Modi was right, there is no discussion on it yet either in the Cabinet or Parliament,” Shah told news agency ANI in an interview.

The home minister, although, on many occasion had said that NRC would be implemented across India.
