Justice Yashwant Varma, who courted controversy over alleged discovery of huge cash from his official residence in the national capital, was appointed as a judge of the Delhi high court in October 2021.
The purported discovery followed a major fire at the residence.
The 56-year-old judge, enrolled as an advocate in 1992, was appointed as an additional judge of the Allahabad high court on October 13, 2014 and took oath as a permanent judge of that court on February 1, 2016.
According to PTI report , While the Supreme Court collegium headed by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna is stated to have initiated the process to transfer Justice Varma from Delhi high court to the Allahabad high court, the judge did not hold his court on Friday.
The five-member collegium headed by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna held an urgent meeting following the reported incident, and decided to initiate the process of shifting Justice Varma out of the Delhi High Court.
Justice Varma’s proposed transfer can come into effect after the Centre accepts the collegium’s recommendation, which is yet to be sent officially.
On SC Collegium recommending transfer of Justice Yashwant Varma of Delhi HC to his parent High Court in Allahabad after an adverse report against him, Retired Justice SN Dhingra quoted by ANI said “What is there to say in this. Corruption in Judiciary is well known. Not just from today but from a long time. Action should be taken on this; they are also aware of it, but no such measure has been taken to correct it and to remove corruption. Till date, corruption is increasing and the common man has to bear the brunt of it…First of all, there are no rules for the judges of High Court and Supreme Court. When currency notes were caught in this, the Supreme Court should have immediately taken permission to register an FIR. Just like an FIR is lodged against a common man, similarly permission should be given to lodge an FIR against a judge and further action should be taken along with it. The Supreme Court should have done this…”
Saket Gokhale, TMC Rajya Sabha MP tweeted on X , This is SHOCKING & SERIOUS.
And how was the judge punished after unaccounted cash was discovered? He was merely “transferred” to another HC.
The judiciary, unlike govt or Parliament, has ZERO outside scrutiny. It’s a black hole accountable to nobody.
This needs to change.
