India held their nerves to beat South Africa by 17 runs in a high- scoring encounter to take 1-0 lead in the theree- match ODI series . The run feast match on Sunday at Ranchi saw a huge crowd turn-out and they were not left disappointed.
Earlier South African Skipper Aiden Markram won the toss and opted bowl first hoing for dew to come into effect while batting second . India put on a massive 349/8 in their alloted 50 overs. India began with openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma. Yashasvi Jaiswal was the first to go for ( 18).
Seasonsed Rohit Sharma looking lean and fit rode his luck as he was dropped on 1 as he went on to score an attractive kncok of 57 ( 5 fours , 3 sixes) . It had all the siganture Rohit shots .
Peerless Virat Kohli made a watchful start and then unleashed his fury as he smashed a scintillating 100. It was his 52nd of his glorious career. Kohli was imperipous as he smashed a power- packed 135 off 120 balls ( 11 fours , 7 sixes). It was a stunning knock from King Kohli.
Skipper K L Rahul after a rather slow start ended up scoring 60. Washington Sundar ( 13) and Rituraj Gaekwad (8) failed to fire. Ravindra Jadeja chipped in with a cameo of 32.
South Africa bowling figures read – Marco Jansen 2/76 ( 10 overs) , Nandre Burger 2/65 9 10 overs) , Corbin Bosch 2/66( 10 overs) bowled much better than the figures suggest at the death. Ottneil Baartman 2/60, Prenelan Subrayen 0/73 ( 10 overs)
In reply, South Africa were rocked early with three wickets down for just 15. Skipper Aiden Markram ( 7), Ryan Rickelton ( 0) and experianced Quinton De Kock ( 0) . Matthew Breetzke put the Proteas back on track with a blazing 72 ( 80 Balls, 8 fours, 1 six) , Tony de Zorzi ( 39), Dewald Brevis ( 37), Marco Jansen who had an excellent Test match at Guwahati carried on his batting form in the ODI as he smashed a fine attacking innings of 70 ( 39 balls, 8 fours, 3 sixes) .
Corbin Bosch gave India nightmare scoring a quick 67 ( 51 balls, 5 fours, 4 sixes) ,Prenelan Subrayen ( 17) and Nandre Burger ( 17 ) . South Africa never gave up even after early jitters. Ottneil Baartman rewamined not out 0. South Africa agonisingly fell 17 runs short as they were bowled out for 332/10 in 49. 2 overs.
