Leading the Opposition charge in Lok Sabha , Deputy Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, spoke on the the Waqf Amendment Bill and alleged it is law against the constitution and the minorities.

Attacking the government , Gogoi said , “Today they (the government) have their eyes on the land of a particular community. Tomorrow, their eyes will be on the land of other minorities of the society. They (the government) want to spread confusion that the current Act is against women, that currently women do not get any role. All these provisions are already there in the law, whether it is protection of widows or giving more help to women. They talk about reform, but they reduced the revenue that should have come, why did they reduce it? Don’t you want the Waqf board to function better? Why did they reduce the revenue from 7% to 5%? Our suggestion is that instead of reducing it, you should increase this revenue from 7 % to 11% .”

According to PTI. Taking a dig at the Modi government , Gogoi further stated , “What message do you (government) want to give? The community that fought for India’s independence, the community that sacrificed its life along with Mangal Pandey in 1857, you want to tarnish the image of that community. When you were writing mercy petitions to the British, when you people were not supporting the Quit India Movement, that community supported the Quit India Movement. You want to tarnish the image of the community which completely rejected Jinnah’s two-nation theory in 1924. This is your divide and rule. Nationalism for us is being united.”

Gogoi further alleged that the “Clause-by-clause discussion, which should have happened in the Joint Committee of Parliament, was not done. The government’s attitude from day one has been to bring a law that is against the Constitution and minorities… Which will disturb the peace in the country” .

Gogoi took a dig the government’s half baked care for minorities when he said , “The government is showing sympathy for minorities, but their double-engine government didn’t allow people to offer Eid namaz on roads. First, they should clarify how many minority MPs they have in Lok Sabha…, ”
