Languishing at the bottom of the points table and what has been forgettable campaign, Sunrisers Hyderabad finally had something to cheer as they won only their second match of IPL 2021. Played at Dubai they beat The Rajasthan Royals by 7 wickets , thus putting the Royals hopes of a play- off spot a tough one.
SRH made a big decision at the start . They dropped former skipper and struggling opener David Warner and as reports suggest unlikely to play further in the remaining matches for the franchise. With auction next year Warner’s stint in SRH is now over. Warner’s exit gave England’s destructive opener Jason Roy his much awaited debut match. And Roy did not disappoint at all. As the match result showed .
Royals skipper Sanju Samson won the toss and decided to bat first . Opener Evin Lewis was out cheaply for 6. Yashasvi Jaiswal 36 off 23 balls got the momentum going. Skipper Sanju Samson too joined the party. Samson was superb in his stroke filled knock of 82 off 57 balls with 7 fours and three maximums. Liam Livingstone ( 4), Mahipal Lomror (29) added some useful runs to help Royals reach 164/5 in their twenty overs. When Samson was on song a target of 170- 180 was on the cards but that was not to be .
For SRH bowlers did a fair job . Sandeep Sharma 1/30 (3 overs) Bhuvneshwar Kumar 1/ 28 (4 overs) , Siddarth Kaul 2/ 36 ( 4 overs) , Rashid Khan 1/31 ( 4 overs)
Sunrisers Hyderabad were positive from the start. Jason Roy made his dream debut and showed what the team missed badly at the top – aggression. Along with Wriddhiman Saha ( 18) the duo put on 57 for the first wicket in just 5.1 overs. Setting the platform for others to finish. Roy was destructive and played way he plays – aggressive shots all around the wicket . Attributes that makes him such a key member of the England’s T20 and ODI’s squads. Roy scored a attacking 60 off 42 balls ( 8 fours , 1 six) . The move to drop Warner by the team management had paid off handsomely.
Priyam Garg was out for 0. Skipper Kane Williamson anchored the innings the way he does best with a fine unbeaten 51 off 41 balls ( 5 fours, 1 six). Along with young Abhishek Sharma not out on 21 off 16 saw SRH home by 7 wickets. SRH finished at 167/3 in 18.3 overs.
