Mumbai Indians won their third match of the Tata IPL 2024 as they beat Punjab Kings by 9 runs in a thrilling encounter at Mullunpur, Mohali.
Earlier, Punjab Kings stand-in Skipper Sam Curran in place of inured Shikhar Dhawan won the toss and opted to field first . And his plan to restrict Mumbai Indians to a modest target back-faired as Mumbai Indians posted 192/ 7 in their 20 overs. Ishan Kishan was out early for 8. Rohit Sharma looked in fine form but perished for 36. Suryakumar Yadav was the star with a belligerent 78 ( 53 balls, 7 fours , 2 sixes). Tilak Varma remained not out for 34 ( 18 balls , 2 fours, 2 sixes) .
MI Skipper Hardik Pandya’s poor scores continued out for 10. Tim David 14 . Romario Shepherd ( 1). Mohammad Nabi ( 0) run-out. MI losing flurry of wickets towards the end of their innings where at one stage they looked set to get around 210- 220. Punjab managed to pull back towards the end and stopped MI from crossing 200.

In reply Punjab were off to a dreadful start as MI rocked them with early wickets . Skipper Sam Curran out for 6 . Fellow opener Prabhsimran Singh ( 0) , Rilee Rossouw ( 1), Liam Livingstone ( 1), Harpreet Singh ( 13) followed soon as Punjab suffered a dramatic batting collapse.
The Punjab innings was in absolute tatters at 49-5, 6.5 overs. Jitesh Sharma was out for 9 . Punjab total read a dismal 77/ 6 in 9. 2 overs.
Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma rallied Punjab from a poor position with some attacking shots . Shashank Singh made 41 ( 25 balls , 2 fours , 3 sixes) . Ashutosh Sharma was sensational in his cameo and made a fighting 61 before he holed out ( 28 balls , 2 fours, 7 sixes) . Harpreet Brar played a nice cameo of 21 ( 20 balls , 2 four s, 1 six) , Kagiso Rabada was run-out 8 with 9 to get off last over , Harshal Patel remained not out 1.
Punjab would be kicking their top order collapse for the loss as they were bowled out at 183/ 110 in 19. 15 overs. . It was case of so near yet so far again. Punjab continues to lose close matches. Mumbai escaping a with a win and get two valuable points .
