Opposition parties in Lok Sabha targeted the government over the Supreme Court order that states are not bound to provide reservation in appointments, saying the Centre has failed to defend the reservation system.
In its order the Supreme Court has ruled that there is no fundamental right to claim reservation in promotion for SCs, STs and OBCs in government jobs.
Hitting back, the government said the Congress is trying to politicise a sensitive issue.
“This is my charge that the Congress is politicising the sensitive issue,” defence minister and deputy leader of the House Rajnath Singh said.
Parliamentary affairs minister Pralhad Joshi also urged speaker Om Birla to expunge remarks made by opposition members against the government. Birla said he would look into the issue.
Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee targeted the government, saying there has been an onslaught on SC and ST reservation since the Modi government came to power.
Meanwhile , Ram Vilas Paswan, Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution expressed happiness over the SC verdict and he tweeted
I welcome the decision of Hon’ble Supreme Court to uphold SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Amendment Act 2018.The Centre Govt is committed for protection of SC/STs from the atrocities and their constitutional rights and today the Apex court has also put its stamp on it.
