Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, the husband of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II, has died aged 99, Buckingham Palace , marking the start of a mourning period in the country.
In a statement issued on behalf of the 94-year-old monarch, the palace said that the country’s longest-serving royal consort had died peacefully at Windsor Castle .
“It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh,” the palace statement read. Philip died two months away from his 100th birthday ( 1921- 2021)
“His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle,” it said.
“The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss. Further announcements will be made in due course,” the statement added.
