In a major setback for former Congress president Rahul Gandhi in the Modi surname defamation case, the Gujarat High Court has upheld Sessions Court’s order denying stay on conviction .
As per ANI report, The HC maintained that the Trial Court conviction order is proper, there is no need to interfere with the said order. Therefore, the application is dismissed.
The Court further noted that at least 10 criminal cases are pending against Rahul Gandhi.
The Court further stated , Rahul Gandhi will not be able to contest elections or seek revocation of the suspension of his status as a Member of Parliament (MP). He can appeal the High Court order in Supreme Court.
Reacting to the Gujarat HC order, Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar told ANI , “Very unfortunate that justice has not prevailed. It is the murder of democracy. Still, the entire country & the Opposition parties stand by Rahul Gandhi. He is a great leader who is fighting across the country to unite it…BJP leaders are not able to tolerate this. They want to block him from Parliament…I feel he (Rahul Gandhi) will grow stronger…”
