Uttar Pradesh government is facing the heat after nine people were killed during a farmers’ protest yesterday over a statement made by Minister of State Ajay Mishra Teni at an event . The death toll in the incident also rose to nine as a local journalist missing since yesterday succumbed to his injuries.
Reports said the violence broke out after two SUVs allegedly ran over a four anti-farm law protesters over a statement made by Minister of state Ajay Mishra Teni, who was on his way to his village after a programme of UP Deputy CM Keshav Maurya in Lakhimpur city. After the incident, angry farmers present at the spot allegedly torched a vehicle belonging to the minister’s convoy. UP DGP Mukul Goel said total 8 persons died in the incident.
UP CM Yogi Adityananth told ANI that Lakhimpur incident is unfortunate. The state government will go into depth and expose elements involved in the incident and will take strict action against them
Meanwhile, The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) has called for a protest outside the offices of district magistrates and divisional commissioners across the country on Monday over two SUVs allegedly running over protesters in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri, farmer leaders Yogendra Yadav and Darshan Pal Singh said
Two SUVs were set on fire by angry farmers, reports said, after they hit a group of protesters. Four of the dead were travelling in the vehicles, an Uttar Pradesh government official in Lucknow said.
Lakhimpur Kheri District Magistrate Arvind Kumar Chaurasia said four farmers and four others were killed. The farmers had assembled there to oppose Maurya’s visit to Banbirpur, the native village of Union Minister of State for Home and MP Ajay Kumar Mishra.
Maurya’s visit to Banbirpur village was cancelled in view of the violence. The violence broke out after two SUVs allegedly ran over a group of anti-farm law protesters, who were demonstrating at the Tikonia-Banbirpur road.
Farmers alleged that the Union minister’s son was in one of the vehicles, a charge denied by Mishra.
Meanwhile, Section 144 has been imposed in Lakhimpur Kheri in view of the situation in the district.

Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav has been detained after he was sitting on a dharna outside his residence. Earlier, he was stopped by the UP Police from going to Lakhimpur Kheri.
Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other party leaders were detained in Sitapur , with the party alleging they were not allowed to meet the victims of the violence that erupted during a farmers’ protest in Lakhimpur Kheri a day earlier.
