External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has clarified the government stand after row emerged following US President Donald Trump’s claim offer to be mediator on the Kashmir issue on the insistence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Making a statement in the Rajya Sabha , Jaishankar said, “I categorically assure the House that no such request has been made by the Prime Minister to the US President. It has been India’s consistent position that all outstanding issues with Pakistan are discussed only bilaterally. Any engagement with Pakistan would require an end to cross-border terrorism,” the EAM said.
“The Shimla Agreement and the Lahore declaration provide the basis to resolve all issues between India and Pakistan bilaterally,” Jaishankar said and added, “I hope my categorical and specific denial leaves no confusion in anyone’s mind.”
Rajya Sabha has been adjourned till noon following an uproar by the Opposition over the statement of US President Donald Trump that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had asked him to mediate in Kashmir issue.
