After Union Civil aviation minister Hardeep Singh Puri has had indicated that India is likely to extend the suspension of passenger flights to and from the United Kingdom to check the spread of the new strain of coronavirus. The government has now extended the suspension of flights to and from UK till January 7 amid alarm over the new highly contagious strain of the coronavirus.

The ministry had last week suspended all flights between the two countries from December 23 to December 31 over the mutated variant of the virus which is more contagious.

“I foresee a slight extension of temporary suspension of India-UK flights,” the minister told a press conference earlier .

In a day or two, we will find out if any additional steps need to be taken, or when we can start easing the current temporary suspension,” he had said.

Twenty people who returned to India from the United Kingdom have tested positive for the new UK variant genome of SARS-CoV-2 so far, the Union Health Ministry said on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, the Union Health Ministry said six people who returned to India from the United Kingdom have tested positive for the new strain of the virus.
