India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on an unannounced visit on Tuesday evening reached Colombo, Sri Lanka Gazette newspaper reported. The surprise visit comes soon after the island nation elected a new President in the Presidential elections held on November 16 .
He later on called on newly elected Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and tweeted a picture of his meeting with him.
“A warm meeting with Sri Lanka President @GotabayaR. Conveyed PM @narendramodis message of a partnership for shared peace, progress, prosperity & security. Confident that under his leadership, #IndiaSriLanka relations would reach greater heights,” Jaishankar tweeted with picture of him meeting with Rajapaksa.

The EAM also said that Rajapaksa has accepted PM Modi’s invitation to visit India on November 29.
