#ENGvIND-1stODI-2026 : Shubman Gill Smashes 80, Axar Patel Shows All-Round Prowess To Help India Beat England By Six Wickets

After  a rather dismal whitewash in the T20I series, India found it’s winning ways in the ODI format . Led ably by Shubman Gill , India beat England by six wickets in the first ODI of the three- match series in in Birmingham.

Earlier English Skipper Harry Brook won  the toss an opted to bat first . His move looked okay as England were off not to a flying but a steady start . The English total was  61-1, 12.2 overs when Jcob Bethell was the first out for 14 . His fellow opener Ben Duckett scored a run- ball 45 ( 45 balls , 6 fours , 2 sixes). But soon Eng;and lost the moentum with flurry of wickets gfall;ing in quick succession . Gurnoor Brar bagged both the openers in a fiery spell. Skipper Harry Brook fell to Bumrah for 1 , Jos Buttler to Prasidh Krishna for 5 , Sam Curran o.

JOe Root stood alone as wickets fell around him. Will Jacks gave support with 20 , Liam Dawson  was superb with fine crucial 68 ( 83 balls 6 fours 1 six). England were at one point reeling at 107/6 in 21.4 overs, Jofra Archer 12 , Adil Rashid 1 , Josh Tongue 0.

Thanks to a gritty and determined 76 not out ( 76 balls 6 fours, 1 six)  by  seasoned Joe Root  Englandmanaged to reach a somewaht fighting total of 258 /10 in 47,5 overs.  India bowling attack was shrewdly roitatated by Shubman Gill and they ewre rewarded with regular wickets to peg England  back.

India Bowling : Jasprit Bumrah 1/31 ( 9 overs), Prasidh Krishna 2/50 ( 10 overs), Gurnoor Brar 2/61 ( 9 overs), Shivam Dube 1/27 ( 6 overs), Washington Sundar 0/13 ( 4 overs), Axar Patel 4/62 ( 9.5 overs)

Chasing 259 for a win , India opened with Skipper Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma . But Rohit looked tentative and was watchful and hence did not last long andfell for just 11. India total  43-1, 7.3 overs. Gill on the other hand was in super touch . Virat Kohli like Rohit did not last long and was out leg before to Jofra Archer for jut 5. India’s two big guns dismissed cheaply.

T20I skipper Shreyas Iyer looked  set for big one but after scoring 35 ( 53 balls , 2 fours) he was run-out . Skipper   Gill kept India on the hunt but had to retire hurt due to cramps but not before scoring a fine 80 ( 75 balls 11 fours, 1 six). K L Rahul 1 too missed out .

Fortunately for India  Washington Sundar not out 52 ( 63 balls , 4 fours 1 six ) and  Axar Patel not out 57 ( 52 balls 5 fours 1 six) completing fine all- round show helped India power home by six wickets. India reaching 262/4 in 45. 2 overs.
