In order to end Maharashtra’s political uncertainty at the time of COVID-19, the Election Commission has now decided to hold the MLC polls in the state before May 27 .

This announcement was important since Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray, who was sworn in on November 28 last year, has time till May 27 to get elected to the state legislature, failing which he will have to step down.

The Election Commission order apparently comes after Maharashtra Governor B S Koshyari had requested the Election Commission  to declare polls for nine vacant seats to the state legislative council.

The polls were deferred due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier it may be recalled that Uddhav Thackeray had called Prime Minister Narendra Modi and asked him to intervene in the matter.

The telephone call came a day after leaders of the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) met Governor B S Koshyari with a fresh cabinet recommendation to nominate Thackeray to the Legislative Council through the Governor’s quota.

The first recommendation of the state cabinet had been made on April nine.

Further, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray paid a courtesy visit to Raj Bhavan on the occasion of ‘Maharashtra Day’ today and met Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari.
