Massive Win For Rahul Gandhi : Supreme Court Stays Conviction In Modi Surname Remark Case ; Congress, Other Opposition Leaders Hail Ruling Says Justice Has Prevailed

In a massive relief for former Congress president Rahul Gandhi, the Supreme Court ha stayed his conviction in the Modi surname defamation case . This is a massive loss of face for the Modi government.

The  Supreme Court in it’s ruling said no reason has been given by trial court judge for imposing maximum sentence, order of conviction needs to be stayed pending final adjudication.

Supreme Court while granting relief to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi says ramifications of the trial court’s order are wide. Not only was Gandhi’s right to continue in public life affected but also that of the electorate who elected him.

There is no doubt that utterances are not in good taste, person in public life is expected to exercise caution while making public speeches, says Supreme Court. As observed by this court while accepting his affidavit in the contempt petition, he (Rahul Gandhi) ought to have been more careful.

“You will see ‘Satyamev Jayate’ everywhere on Parliament premises. The conspiracy against Rahul Gandhi has failed today. Rahul Gandhi’s victory will come down heavily on Modi Ji…,” he said .

“The people of Kerala, especially the people of Wayanad will be happy as they have got their MP back. BJP should give an apology on this issue. The highest court of India realised that this is an attempt to silence Rahul Gandhi…, said Kerala Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala to ANI.

The SC ruling now could pave the way for  Rahul Gandhi to return as MP . Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal told ANI outside parliament , “The Speaker has to take a decision now. The entire country and world is now looking at the Speaker. Automatically, this should be revoked immediately. This is what we need, this is what the country needs. Our leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha will officially request the Speaker with a copy of the judgement.”
