Gritty New Zealand secured an  emphatic eight-wicket win for their first Test victory in India since 1988 as the Black Caps chased down 107 and humbled the home side early on the final day of the rain-interrupted series opener .

Earlier New Zealand seamers had opened up the Test- match in sensational fashion , bundling out India for their worst home total of 46. New Zealand seamers were all over India , Matt Henry was superb with fine figures of 5/ 15. Young speedster William ORourke made an impact with 4/22.

Kiwis made 402 ( Devon Conway 91, Rachin Ravindra 134, Tim Southee 65 ) in reply. New Zealand bowled out Rohit Sharma’s side for 462 in the second innings to lay the platform for a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Earlier, chasing 107 for victory, the Kiwis got off to a shaky start after Jasprit Bumrah took out Tom Latham, trapping him LBW. Latham took the DRS but had to walk back for a duck. Devon Conway struggled before he was also trapped in front of the stumps as Bumrah took the review and won the appeal.

Rachin Ravindra and Will Young remained calm under pressure after the loss of two early wickets to get the job done. Centurion in the first innings, Rachin Ravindra (39 not out), in partnership with Will Young (45 not out) took the team across the finish line on Day 5 of the first Test.

This is their first Test win in India since 1988. Back then, the Kiwis had defeated India by 136 runs in the second Test at the Wankhede, in Mumbai. The second Test between the two begins in Pune October 24.
