Former Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi took oath as Rajya Sabha MP . Gogoi’s wife Rupanjali Gogoi, daughter, and son in law were also present in Parliament.

However, Congress and the opposition staged a walkout from the Rajya Sabha over Gogoi’s membership to the House. Meanwhile, Union Minister for Law and Justice, Communications and Electronics and Information Technology Ravishankar Prasad welcomed Gogoi in the Rajya Sabha.

Prasad was critical of the opposition’s move to walk out when Gogoi took oath as he remarked : ” RS has a great tradition of many eminent persons coming from diverse fields, including former CJIs. Gogoi who has taken oath today will surely contribute his best. It was grossly unfair to do like that (oppn walk out during his oath-taking ceremony).

President Ram Nath Kovind had nominated the former CJI to the Rajya Sabha on March 16. Gogoi served as the 46th Chief Justice of India from October 3, 2018, to November 17, 2019.

Gogoi’s nomination came under fire as after barely four months of retiring he was nominated to the Upper house. In his tenure he had given landmark verdicts like : Ayodhya Verdict , Rafale  Deal , both of them were in  favour of the Modi government.
