India, the largest democracy and fastest-growing large economy in the world, faces unique challenges when it comes to the epochal AI.

A scrupulously researched book, Enter Prompt: Navigating AI in the World’s Largest Democracy written by Barsali Bhattacharyya, currently deputy director at the Economist Intelligence Unit, and Sidharth Sreekumar, senior product manager at the Economist Intelligence Unit interviews practitioners, policymakers and tech evangelists and answers the questions every Indian today is grappling with.

Some of the key themes explored in the book:

v Jobs & Businesses: AI threatens roles in India’s services sector, clerks, tellers, call centres, but opens doors for startups and solopreneurs.

v Education: AI can aid transformation, but must empower educators to overcome deep infrastructure and tech divides.

v Healthcare: AI could raise life expectancy, but data issues, human limitations, and cultural nuances pose major hurdles.

v Inequality: Without addressing India’s socioeconomic and tech disparities, AI could deepen existing divides.

v Entertainment: AI may immortalize Bollywood icons and empower indie creators, but threatens singers, voice artists, and the VFX industry.

v Love & Relationships: AI is reshaping matchmaking in a socially conservative society but raises complex questions around authenticity and safety.

v Social Isolation & Gender: India’s rising interest in AI companionship reveals deeper societal shifts and poses challenges for women’s safety.

v Security & Justice: AI can support India’s strained legal and governance systems but must be implemented with clear safeguards for privacy and accountability.

Steering clear of utopian hype and dystopian gloom, Enter Prompt: Navigating AI in the World’s Largest Democracy provides a balanced and nuanced understanding of AI’s use cases and impact on our lives, livelihood and society.
