Cracking Down : After FCRA Cancellation Sonam Wangschuk Is Arrested, Sent Jodhpur Jail; Centre Defnds, Opposition Slams Move

The police arrested climate activist Sonam Wangchuk  two days after protests demanding Ladakh’s statehood and Sixth Schedule status left four people dead and 90 injured in the Union Territory.

Wangchuk was taken into custody by a police party led by Ladakh Police chief S D Singh Jamwal at 2:30 pm, officials said, adding that he was subsequently lodged in a jail in Rajasthan’s Jodhpur.

According to various media reports, While there was no official word on the charges pressed against Wangchuk, sources within the Ladakh administration indicated that the stringent National Security Act (NSA) has been invoked against the climate activist

Police have shifted Wangchuk out of Ladakh, while the Ladakh administration has snapped all mobile internet connections within the jurisdiction of Leh district as a precautionary measure, they said.

They soon found the reason — the climate activist had been arrested from his village Ulyaktopo by a strong team of Ladakh Police, led by Director General S D Singh Jamwal.

Wangchuk was immediately shifted out of Ladakh.

While Centre has defended tha arrest, Oppostion parties have hit out at the BJP
