Causing A Stir : BJP MP Sushmita Dev’s Lungiwala Jibe At Communist Party of India-Marxist’s John Brittas Roacks Rajya Sabha Proceedings

Raising the matter in the House on Wednesday, Brittas alleged that Dev had left her allotted seat and moved to a seat immediately behind him while he was speaking and repeatedly called him ‘lungiwala’.

A privilege motion against Bharatiya Janata Party MP Sushmita Dev for allegedly using the derogatory term ‘lungiwala‘ against Communist Party of India-Marxist’s John Brittas led to the adjournment of Rajya Sabha proceedings.

A row over an alleged ‘lungiwala‘ remark by BJP member Sushmita Dev against John Brittas during proceedings on Monday rocked the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, with the CPI-M MP raising the issue in the House. Dev denied that she had cast aspersions on the attire of any state.

The issue triggered an uproar in the morning sitting, forcing Chairman C P Radhakrishnan to adjourn the House till 2 pm.

After the House resumed, Dev put her position on record, while Leader of the House J P Nadda said the misunderstanding between the two MPs could be resolved if they met him in his chamber.

Raising the matter in the House on Wednesday, Brittas alleged that Dev had left her allotted seat and moved to a seat immediately behind him while he was speaking and repeatedly called him ‘lungiwala‘.

“She repeatedly called me lungiwala,” he alleged.

Brittas had earlier moved a privilege motion against Dev over the alleged remark.

After the House was adjourned, Dev said in the House that she wanted to make it clear that she had not cast aspersions on the attire of any state.
