#CAA Protests : Uttar Pradesh On The Boil , 7 People Killed During Protests

Uttar Pradesh faced the brunt of the protests against Citizenship Amendment Act, officials said. One person has been killed each in Meerut, Sambhal, Kanpur and Firozabad and two died in Bijnor as the protests turned violent. Around two dozen people have also been injured in the protests. One person had died in the clashes in Lucknow on Thursday. Taking the death toll in the last twenty hours in the state to 7.

Director General of Police O P Singh said that two people lost their lives in Bijnor and one each in Meerut, Sambhal and Firozabad. But officials reported a death in Kanpur as well.

The cause of death would be known after after a post-mortem, they said.

In the state-wide protests, there were reports of firing on police parties at various places, officials said.

Police retaliated with teargas shells followed by rubber bullets, they said.

Singh said over 50 policemen seriously injured during the protests.

In an unprecedented clampdown, internet services have been suspended across major cities in Uttar Pradesh as the state government doubled down on efforts to check the spread of rage against the new citizenship law.
