Anti-Sikh Riots Of 1984 : Delhi High Court Dismisses Pleas Of 88 Convicts, Awards 5 Year Jail Term

In huge victory for the 1984 anti-sikh riots victims, the Delhi High Court has upheld the conviction of around 80 people and awarded five year jail term . The case happened to be in East Delhi Trilokpuri area

The high court dismissed their appeals against the conviction by a trial court for burning houses and curfew violations during the riots.

Justice R K Gauba directed all the convicts to surrender within four weeks.

It may be recalled that following the assassination of then Prime Minister Mrs Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984 by her own sikh bodyguards – Satwant Singh and Beant Singh there was widespread riots and nearly 3,000 Sikhs lost their lives.

On November 20, a Delhi court awarded death penalty to convict Yashpal Singh and ordered life imprisonment to another Naresh Sherawat for killing two men during the riots
