Amar Jawan Jyoti : Centre’s Move To Merge Flame With National War Memorial Slammed By Rahul Gandhi, Shashi Tharoor, Manish Tewari

The Congress party has slammed the Government for its its move to merge the flame of Amar Jawan Jyoti with that of National War Memorial.  According to reports, Amar Jawan Jyoti flame at India Gate will be extinguished after 50 years and merged with the flame at the National War Memorial , military officials said.

The Amar Jawan Jyoti was constructed as a memorial for Indian soldiers who were killed in action in the 1971 Indo-Pak war, which India won, leading to the creation of Bangladesh.

It was inaugurated by the then prime minister, Indira Gandhi, on January 26, 1972.

The Centre’s move drew flak from the opposition, former Congress president Rahul Gandhi, Ssenior Congress leaders Manish Tewari , Shashi Tharoor hitting the government hard in their respective tweets.

In a tweet in hindi Rahul wrote, “It is a matter of great sadness that the immortal flame that used to burn for our brave soldiers will be extinguished today. Some people cannot understand patriotism and sacrifice. Nevertheless, we will once again light the Amar Jawan Jyoti for our soldiers!”

Reacting to The Centre’s move, Shashi Tharoor, Congress MP, was scathing in his tweet as he wrote, This government has no respect for democratic tradition & established convention, whether in parliament or out of it. The sanctity acquired after fifty years of the Amar Jawan Jyoti is being lightly snuffed out.

RJD MP Manoj Jha attacked the government over the move and said that it is neither good politics nor good optics.
