In a tragic  incident Thirty-eight people, including 10 children, died in a stampede at actor-politician Vijay’s rally in Karur, about 400 km away from Chennai.
According to media reports, Vijay, heading the fledgeling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, said he was heart-broken and in “unbearable pain,” following the stampede that left women and children dead in one of the worst tragedies in the state recently.

“An unfortunate incident happened; a regrettable one. As per latest information, 38 have persons have died. They are 12 men, 16 women and 10 children,” Tamil Nadu DGP G Venkataraman said.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin announced a commission of inquiry to be led by Justice Aruna Jagadeesan to probe into the stampede.

President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and others condoled the tragic incident.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke with Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi and Chief Minister M K Stalin to take stock of the situation following a stampede in Karur and assured them of all possible central assistance to deal with the situation, sources said.

The Union home ministry also sought a report from the Tamil Nadu government on the incident, sources said.
